Why Choose a Big Sur Redwood Elopement
The redwoods provide an otherworldly atmosphere with their towering canopies, while Big Sur’s coastal cliffs and ocean views add breathtaking contrast. Here, you can forget the noise and hustle of large weddings. Big Sur is filled with awe-inspiring spots where you and your partner (and me, your photographer) can be just there.
Whether you want to exchange vows under the ancient trees, hike to a cliffside overlook, or share a quiet picnic by a hidden stream, Big Sur and the redwoods offer endless opportunities to make your day uniquely yours. Adventure is built into every corner of this incredible place!
It is so much fun to explore, and I absolutely recommend having multiple days here!

Where to Have Your Big Sur Redwoods Elopement
When you choose to elope in Big Sur redwoods, you have two options to consider – private land and venues or public lands, like National Parks. The choice really comes down to what kind of experience you’re envisioning for your day.
Private venues are a great choice if you’re after an intimate, stress-free experience with all that you may need in one place. These spots offer guaranteed privacy, easy access for guests and even your pups. They are located conveniently in Big Sur, and have onsite accommodations and a cozy space to get ready. Plus, you won’t have to worry about permits, park rules, or unexpected park closures.
Of course, there are also public lands, like the stunning state parks in Big Sur, which might be exactly what you have in mind when you think about eloping. The state parks in Big Sur are home to some of the most breathtaking redwood groves and coastal views in the world, and saying your vows in the heart of such iconic natural beauty is nothing short of magical. That said, public spots come with a bit more logistical juggling, like the rather complex permit process, where you might not get complete privacy, and access can be tricky sometimes.
Personally, I recommend opting for a venue, hotel, or Airbnb that would allow an elopement on-site to make it easier and more convenient for you. But you should do whatever feels the best for you on your big day! Just in case, I’ll share more about ALL your options below!
Venues and Private Land
Glen Oaks Big Sur
Glen Oaks is a dream destination for Big Sur elopements, offering everything you need for a seamless day. Glen Oaks is my TOP SUGGESTION for eloping in the Big Sur Redwoods. Whether it’s just the two of you or a small, intimate wedding with a handful of loved ones, this charming property has you covered. With cozy cabins and a boutique hotel, everyone can stay here comfortably without the stress of shuttling between locations. It’s also great because here you can stay, elope, and have an intimate reception all in one place!
For your ceremony, Glen Oaks provides two stunning options. The Fairy Circle is a magical ring of redwoods, perfect for elopements or intimate ceremonies with up to 20 guests. If you’re planning a slightly larger celebration, the Redwood Grove features a serene lawn surrounded by towering trees and can accommodate up to 100 people.
If you’re staying overnight and eloping without any guests, you can say your vows anywhere on the property without any additional fees. THIS IS HUGE! Glen Oaks may be a little more on the pricier side, but this is your wedding! The added bonus of eloping here without additional fees won’t be found anywhere else in Big Sur.
Pricing varies by season, with lower rates available from December through March and peak season pricing from April to November.
Imagine for just a moment… waking up to a slow morning and getting ready with your doors open to the redwood canopy. You walk just steps outside your cabin for a magical first look. After you stroll through the forest to your dreamy ceremony location under the trees. We adventure and take it all in. Your vintage car soon arrives with your chauffeur and its time to head to the coastline! We explore countless Big Sur locations and you enjoy a private picnic on the beach. After a day unlike any other, you get to come back and soak in the dreamy outdoor tubs with the stars twinkling above. I can’t think of a more incredible wedding day!

Their packages start on the higher end at about $6,500 for elopements and small weddings but can get even more expensive depending on the size of your wedding.
Post Ranch Inn
Perched high above the cliffs, this Post Ranch Inn is a luxurious resort that offers some of the most stunning ocean views for your elopement. They have special elopement and micro-wedding packages available for your day, whether it’s just for the two of you or up to 20 people.
Their ceremony locations range from private terraces of your room overlooking the coastline to secluded spots in the redwoods. Where you’ll be able to have your ceremony will depend on the package you choose and how many people are coming along to celebrate.
For the reception, you can celebrate with a semi-private dinner at Sierra Mar, their on-site fine dining restaurant. If you’re choosing the largest package available, you’ll get an exclusive use of the Post House and its surrounding terrace.
The smaller elopement packages start at about $2500.
Deetjens
Deetjen’s Big Sur Inn is as charming as it gets. The property is steeped in history, with hand-built cabins that ooze character and vintage vibes. While they do not allow elopement ceremonies on site. It is still a magical place to stay in the redwood forest of Big Sur.
Big Sur Lodge
Big Sur Lodge offers four different venue options for your day, including the spacious Santa Lucia Room, which can host up to 120 guests. They offer both indoor and outdoor spaces, so you can customize your day to your wishes or know that you have a backup plan in case of bad weather.
They also have smaller elopement packages for two and up to 10 people. Big Sur Lodge also provides access to breathtaking ceremony locations like redwood groves and scenic overlooks. There are options on-site and within Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park (with park approval). And their on-site catering staff can take of your dinner and reception for you!
Big Sur Lodge elopement packages start at $599, depending on the day of the week and the add-ons you choose.
Henry Miller Library
Henry Miller Library, nestled among the redwoods is perfect for smaller ceremonies with up to 30 guests. It’s a charming, quirky space great for a small celebration, but you can have a larger celebration of up to 150 people too.
Note that tents are not allowed on site, and elopement is only allowed for up to 2 hours, so you’ll have to have more things planned to extend your day. However, they are easily accessible via Highway 1 and only 10 minutes away from local campgrounds and hotels, so you can easily head somewhere else to continue your celebration.
The rental fee for the use of the venue is $2000 for up to 30 persons. *Update: The redwood canyon is no longer accessible to this location. However, it is still a wonderful, intimate, private venue for an elopement ceremony. Their staff is so welcoming and kind too!
Big Sur Grange
The Big Sur Grange next to Glen Oaks is a cozy, rustic venue for couples seeking a laid-back, intimate celebration that feels homey. The hall itself features charming wood details, vaulted ceilings, and plenty of space for dining, dancing, or even a cozy ceremony indoors. And when you go outside, you’re surrounded by stunning towering trees.
While it’s less formal than some of the area’s luxury venues, it makes up for it with charm and spirit and leaves room for creativity. This is suitable for weddings of up to 85 people.
Loma Vista Gardens
Loma Vista Gardens is a dreamy garden wedding venue offering a variety of stunning spaces for your elopement, micro wedding, and even a larger wedding of up to 210 guests. Here’s some insight about the spaces, but you can also learn more about them here!
- Lower Courtyard: Situated at the lowest point in the gardens, this area offers gorgeous views of the surrounding hills—perfect for a sunset dinner or a ceremony. Exchange vows under the honeysuckle-covered entryway or use the pergola as a picturesque altar.
- Nest Level: One terrace above the courtyard. This area includes the lawn and amphitheater. The lawn is a favorite for outdoor dining, and the cozy “nest” can be transformed into a dessert bar, lounge area, or photo booth.
- Grazing Level: A transitionary space between the Nest Level and the Upper Terrace, this area is lined with handcrafted redwood countertops, perfect for hors d’oeuvres or a grazing station. It can also be set up as a casual lounge or standing cocktail area.
- Upper Terrace: This is the largest and most versatile space in the gardens. Facing west toward a stunning valley, it’s a popular spot for ceremonies and receptions.
- The Plateau: Elevated above the Upper Terrace, this area is another favorite for ceremonies. Guests can enjoy forest views with sunlight filtering through the trees or sit facing a majestic redwood backdrop. When not used for the ceremony, the Plateau is a great stage for music, speeches, or additional seating.
Their packages start at $3200 for a small elopement package for up to 16 people for 2 hours and go up to $26500+.
Big Sur Campgrounds
Big Sur Campgrounds is a hidden gem! They offer campsites and adorable A-Frame cabins all nestled into the forest. A redwood elopement ceremony is possible here. But it’s also just a great place for photos. Here you don’t have to worry about taking a long hike or securing additional permits. It’s charming and especially quite on weekdays.
State Parks and Public Land
Garrapata State Park
Garrapata State Park is the first park you’ll find yourself in as you enter the Big Sur area from the North. It is known for its dramatic ocean views, rugged cliffs, and vibrant flowers in the spring. It’s the perfect choice for couples who want a coastal backdrop without the crowds often found at more popular spots. The park features several accessible trails into the redwoods, as well as short paths leading to secluded beaches and jaw-dropping overlooks.
If this spot stands out to you the most, you can check out my full Garrapata State Park elopement guide here!
Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park
Known for its towering redwood groves, scenic hiking trails, and the serene Big Sur River, Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park is a haven for nature and adventure-loving couples. It’s a fantastic choice if you want to feel surrounded by nature while still having accessible amenities like parking and restrooms. The park’s redwood groves are perfect for intimate ceremonies, with plenty of scenic spots that feel private despite being in a public space.
This place doesn’t have beach access, so for that you should visit Pfeiffer Beach, which is just down the road. While their names are similar Pfeiffer Big Sur is a State Park and Pfeiffer Beach is part of the Los Padres National Forest.
Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park
Famous for the iconic McWay Falls, Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park offers some of the most stunning coastal views and redwood forests in Big Sur. This is a really busy tourist location (rightfully so!). However, eloping during sunrise or sunset gives you the place all to yourselves!
Limekiln State Park
Limekiln State Park offers a unique mix of towering trees, cascading waterfalls, and even remnants of historic lime kilns that add a unique touch to the scenery. Accessibility is fairly easy, with short trails leading to incredible ceremony spots, including the picturesque waterfall area or peaceful redwood groves.
Out of all the State Parks mentioned, Limekiln State Park doesn’t require an elopement permit, making it much easier to plan your day there. But learn more about getting permits for other locations next!
Big Sur Redwood Elopement Permits
Navigating the permitting process in Big Sur can be tricky, especially with the different requirements for each State Park. Special Event Permits are required for elopement ceremonies and photography permits from the California Film Commission are needed for additional photos in each area of Big Sur. As your awesome Big Sur Elopement Photographer, I already have a special event permit in place in certain areas of Big Sur! Woohoo!
Here are some things to keep in mind as you plan to get your elopement permit here:
- Elopements are capped at ten people, including the couple, officiant, photographer, and any other guests or vendors.
- Only one handheld decoration (like a bouquet) is allowed. Large decorations, amplified sounds, or scattering items (like petals or confetti) are prohibited.
- Permits allow a maximum of four hours, including hike-in and hike-out times. Events are only permitted during park hours (sunrise to sunset).
- Since only one event is allowed per day in each park, applying well in advance gives you the best chance of securing your preferred date (except for Garrapata State Park).
- Larger events or weddings with decorations are allowed with a pricier permit.
Once we’ve decided on your perfect location, we’ll dive into obtaining the necessary special use permits for your ceremony. While securing permits for the state parks may seem daunting, rest assured that I am here to guide and help you through every step.
The National Forest is a bit more relaxed in terms of permitting, providing an excellent alternative for your elopement. Together, we’ll ensure all the paperwork is in order so you can focus on enjoying your incredible day in Big Sur!
If you’d like to learn a bit more about the permitting, you can check out the resource here!
Getting Your Marriage License
To elope in Big Sur, you’ll need a California marriage license. If you obtain a marriage license in one county, you are not restricted to getting married in that specific county. You can have your wedding ceremony in any California county. However, the license must be returned to the county where it was issued for official recording.
The marriage license is typically valid immediately upon issuance and for up to 90 days. This means that you must have your marriage ceremony within the 90-day period, and the completed license must be returned to the county clerk’s office for recording.
In California, couples have the option to self-solemnize their wedding, which means they can act as their own officiants during the marriage ceremony. This allows couples to exchange their vows and legally marry without the need for an external officiant. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
- Self-Solemnization Rights: California law permits self-solemnization, allowing couples to marry without an officiant. This is particularly useful for couples who prefer a private and intimate ceremony.
- Marriage License Requirements: Even if you choose to self-solemnize, you must still obtain a valid marriage license from the county clerk’s office before the ceremony.
- Completing the Marriage License: When you self-solemnize, both partners must sign the marriage license as the officiants. Ensure that you follow the county’s guidelines for completing and returning the license.
- Witnesses (Optional): While not required for self-solemnization, some couples choose to have witnesses present during the ceremony. Check with your county clerk’s office to confirm local regulations.
Documentation
Be sure to understand the specific documentation and requirements set by the county where you obtain your marriage license. Each county may have slightly different procedures.
Hot Tip
If you don’t want to worry about all these things for your elopement, you can get legally married beforehand and then head out for your adventures later!
Best Time to Elope
You can elope in Big Sur’s redwoods all year round, but each season brings its own vibe and potential challenges. Overall, the weather here can be unpredictable as Big Sur is covered in what’s called microclimates. One part may be bathed in sunshine, while another is gray, cold, or even rainy.
Spring brings lush greenery and blooming wildflowers, adding vibrant colors to the already stunning redwood forests. It is also a beautiful time for elopements, with fewer crowds than the summer months.
Summer is the season of long, dreamy days. The redwoods stay cool under their towering canopy, even when the coastal areas heat up. Summer is also the more touristy season, so the public spaces are likely to be busy, and you should book your permits and accommodations ASAP as the summers fill up fast.
Fall is beautiful, with gorgeous foliage, decently warm weather, and smaller crowds. Winter is nice if you want to enjoy some peace and quiet and don’t mind some rain. Overall, this is one of the best spots for winter elopement because it remains open all year round!
Be prepared by bringing layers to stay comfortable in any condition. It is important to have backup plans. If you have me as your elopement photographer, we will plan these out in advance together, so nothing would be a surprise or add stress to your day.
Where to Stay in Big Sur
If you’re not choosing to stay and get married in one of the venues or hotels I mentioned earlier, then here are some more ideas on the best places to stay in and around Big Sur for your Redwood elopement.
- Big Sur Campground: If you’d like to enjoy a camping experience, this is the place to be! They have RV sites and tiny, cozy cabins. They are a family-friendly space, so they have implemented a quiet time between 10 pm and 8 am, which can be a pro and a con, depending on what you’d like your elopement stay to be.
- Big Sur River Inn: Later on, I talk about this being a great place for a meal, but it’s also a wonderful, rustic inn where you can stay. They have cozy cabin-feel rooms with nice views of the lawn and redwood-lined Big Sur River.
- Tickle Pink Inn: This place might not be the closest location to your ceremony spot, but it’s an oceanfront hotel with beautiful coastal views and great amenities.
- Alila Ventana Big Sur: If you want to be spoiled and pampered on your elopement, this is the place to go! It features spa services, immersive experiences like sound baths and cold plunges in a waterfall, morning yoga, and intimate ceremony locations on-site in the redwood groves. The dining experience here is out of this world. From glamping to hotel rooms to private homes, Ventana offers every type of accommodation.
There are also plenty of Airbnbs and Vrbos in the area. Given the frequent closures on Highway 1, I recommend staying closer to the north side or even in Carmel. Carmel and Monterey are beautiful towns with excellent cell service, a variety of stores, and delicious restaurants. However, staying inside Big Sur itself cuts down on drive time and allows you to fully immerse yourself in the experience.
Where to Eat
You’ll likely be hungry after a day of adventuring in the redwoods, so these are some of my favorite spots in Big Sur for a small evening reception or celebratory dinner for two.
- Sierra Mar at the Post Ranch Inn is the ultimate spot for a luxurious dining experience. Perched on the cliffs above the ocean, this spot delivers sweeping views that will leave you absolutely speechless. And their seasonal, locally sourced menu is out of this world, too!
- Big Sur River Inn: If you’re looking for something more laid-back but still charming, this spot is great! Here, you get to dine by the river, surrounded by redwoods, and enjoy a really nice meal while you’re there.
- The Sur House, located at Ventana Big Sur, is a nice mix of refined yet cozy. It’s got coastal views and a nice American cuisine menu.
- Solstice @ The Village, Big Sur: If you’re staying at the Village, check out their restaurant + cocktail lounge. It has a nice, warm, welcoming atmosphere and super delicious food!
Fun Elopement Activities
An elopement day is not about how much time you spend in front of the camera. It’s about the full-day elopement experience you create to cherish and remember forever. Filling your day with things you love to do will make it THAT much more meaningful.
On your elopement day, I am your guide, coordinator, friend, and, of course, photographer. Together, we get to run around and explore the beautiful locations you have chosen, creating personal moments and memories, catching a break, and, yes—time for posing and getting those amazing shots.
So what do you do for those in-between moments that would make your day uniquely yours? It can be ANYTHING! Tradition, adventures, and just being together.
- Grab a bite to eat at one of the restaurants I mentioned before.
- First Dance
- Cake cutting/eating dessert
- Have a picnic
- Reading letters from friends and family
- Speeches
- Catered dinner at your Airbnb
- Have an intimate reception with your loved ones
- Exchanging gifts
- Hiking numerous trails in all the mentioned parks.
- Star lantern photos (location and weather permitting) – try spotting the Milky Way!
- Campfire for S’mores and more!
- Take sunset photos along the coast (you don’t have to only stay at the redwoods)
- Rent a vintage car
- Boat ride
- If you have the time, explore some of the hidden beaches in Big Sur
- Go for a paddle or kayaking adventure
- Take a helicopter ride
Best Hikes in the Big Sur Redwoods
If you’d like to include a hike on your elopement day, I’m all for it! Here, you can go hiking pretty much anywhere, which is the best part of Big Sur! There are trails of various lengths and difficulty levels, and it’s so much fun finding new trails you haven’t discovered before! Here are some hike suggestions, but I’m always happy for us to find something magical off the beaten path on our day!
- Pfeiffer Falls Trail (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park): It’s a relatively short hike, only a 2-mile round trip through redwoods leading to a picturesque 60-foot waterfall.
- Valley View Trail (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park): This relatively easy trail is about 2.5 miles round trip and starts near the previous Pfeiffer Falls trailhead. It offers amazing views of the redwoods and the Big Sur River Gorge!
- Buzzards Roost Trail (Pfeiffer Big Sur State Park): This is one of the lengthier hikes on the list, nearly 5 miles round trip. It’s absolutely amazing, with a mix of shady redwood groves and open ridges, and breathtaking views of the Big Sur Valley and the Ocean.
- Limekiln Trail (Limekiln State Park): a 2.6-mile hike through redwoods to historic lime kilns and waterfalls. You don’t want to miss the short spur trail to Limekiln Falls, which is a stunning 100-foot waterfall tucked away in the forest!
- Ewoldsen Trail (Julia Pfeiffer Burns State Park): This is one of the more strenuous hikes of around 5 miles round trip. But it’s definitely worth the effort if you’re up for it, with all the towering trees and occasional breaks in the canopy revealing coastal views.
What to Bring With You
This is a rough idea of what you should consider packing. Depending on the activities and timeline you have in mind for your day, you may need some additional items that are not included.
- Download offline road and trail maps for all locations
- Headlamps/flashlights
- Bluetooth speaker for the first dance
- Snacks and water
- Vow books
- Rings
- Bouquet
- Sunscreen
- Layers because it can be cold before sunrise
- Shoes with traction that you don’t mind being photographed in
- Blanket
- Waterproof layers and makeup
- Clear Umbrellas!
- First aid kit
- Deodorant
- Bug spray
- Extra battery pack for phones
- Marriage License
What to Avoid
- Uncomfortable Shoes: Redwood forests are not the place for fancy footwear. Opt for sturdy, comfortable shoes with good traction to navigate the forest floor and uneven terrain.
- Tulle Wedding Dresses: They pick up dirt quickly. Choose a dress that is easy to move in and won’t get too dirty.
- Follow the Leave No Trace principle: Pack it in, pack it out. Respect the natural beauty of the redwoods by leaving no trace behind.
Average Cost of Your Big Sur Redwood Elopement
The cost of eloping in Big Sur can vary widely depending on how you choose to go about your day. You can elope as cheaply as the cost of a marriage license and elopement location permit and a bottle of bubbly to celebrate. But if you’d like to add activities, bring guests, get nice elopement attire, travel, accommodations, get a photographer, and other vendors, the costs will be much more.
On average, a full-day or multi-day elopement experience can cost anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000+.
It will be more expensive if you choose to have a small or larger wedding at one of the venues I mentioned above, depending on the plan of your day, how many guests you’re bringing, what florals you’re looking to get, and more.
Big Sur Redwood Elopement Planning Checklist
