Their Stokksnes Elopement in Iceland

Tucked away on the southeastern coast of Iceland near Höfn, Stokksnes is like the ultimate elopement backdrop. Sarah and Michael chose this place for the dramatic peaks, rolling black sand dunes, crashing waves, a moody Viking village, and that Icelandic magic that makes everything feel both ancient and otherworldly.

But what made it unforgettable was how they experienced it: in a campervan, chasing the never-ending summer sunset. And we got lucky having the place nearly to ourselves!

Sarah and Michael explored the dunes, ran along the shoreline, and read their vows to each other with nothing but the sound of the waves crashing right behind them. It was absolutely breathtaking!

Getting Ready in their Campervan

They began the day cozied up in their campervan, getting ready together for one of the most epic days of their life. The camper was their home base for the week. It was the perfect space to sleep, make coffee, and chase the beauty of the Ring Road without much rush.  I can’t say this enough – driving in Iceland is the experience!

Having a van gave them so much freedom to pull over at Skógafoss, hit the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon, continue on to explore hot springs, and take their time soaking it all in.

They wrote their vows together that afternoon, sitting in the back of their van, curled up in blankets with the breeze from the open doors and views of the dunes just beyond. It was the kind of moment that sticks with you!

Their Intimate Vow Exchange

Together, we wandered into the dunes where they had their private vow exchange. The texture of the grass against the black sand, the mountains in the distance, and that endless Icelandic sky was EVERYTHING!

From there, they just enjoyed that newlywed bliss. They ran wild down the beach, soaking up every minute of their time in this magical place. The slow sunset gave us plenty of time to explore every corner, from the Viking village tucked into the hillside to the windy shoreline that stretched on forever.

Rent a Campervan

The campervan will not only serve as the best mode of transportation around here, but it will also be your home base, mobile dressing room, snack shack, and escape pod. It lets you go at your own pace and reach places you’d never see otherwise. Just make sure you choose a camper with F-road clearance if you want to explore the wilder parts of the country. It’s not nearly as intimidating as it sounds—I promise! Plus, there are so many awesome companies that walk you through it all.

Plan for an 8–12 Hour or Multi-Day Elopement Experience

There’s just too much beauty to rush through. If you’re coming this far, give yourself time to breathe. Between the golden hour that lasts forever, the driving, and all the epic stops along the way (Skógafoss! Jökulsárlón! random roadside hot springs!), you’ll want the time to enjoy it all without watching the clock.

Short on Time? Fly into Höfn

If a full Ring Road road trip isn’t in the cards, consider flying from Reykjavík to Höfn—it turns a 6-hour drive into a 1-hour flight (which is how a lot of locals get around, too!). Then rent a car and explore the east and southeast coast from there. You’ll still get to experience Stokksnes and nearby gems without the long drive.

Add In Activities

This is Iceland! Make your elopement more than just “ceremony + photos.” Add a stop at a hidden waterfall. Climb a glacier. Visit an ice cave. Share coffee from a retro school bus café. Bathe in a hot spring. Whether it’s a simple first look in your van or a hike into the highlands, it’s about crafting a day you’ll remember forever.
