Why Elope in Mammoth Lakes
Mammoth Lakes is a dream come true for couples who love adventure, peace, and jaw-dropping scenery. Imagine saying your vows beside a crystal-clear lake with dramatic peaks behind you, sharing a picnic by a waterfall, then soaking in a natural hot spring as the stars come out. Whether you’re hiking to an alpine lake or kicking back in a cozy cabin, this region gives you the space and freedom to craft a wedding day that’s totally and unapologetically yours.
Best Time to Elope in Mammoth Lakes
Spring & Early Summer
This is one of the most magical times in Mammoth Lakes, especially if you love wildflowers, flowing waterfalls, and snowcapped peaks. The higher elevations may still have snow, but lower trails and meadows start coming to life with vibrant blooms. Expect crisp mornings and warm afternoons—perfect for hiking, photos, and soaking up the scenery.
Summer
If you’re looking to explore alpine lakes, paddleboard on crystal-clear water, or take on higher elevation hikes, this is your season. Days are warm and sunny, though it can get chilly at night—bring layers! Summer is also the most popular time to visit, so expect more people on trails and in town. That said, there are still plenty of hidden gems and quieter trails to explore if you know where to look (and I do!).
Fall
Mammoth Lakes in the fall is an absolute dream. Golden aspens light up the hillsides, and the crisp air makes it perfect for cozy elopement vibes. This is peak foliage season in the Eastern Sierra, especially around lakes like Sabrina, Convict, and Lundy. The trails are quieter, and the sunsets are simply epic!
Winter
For adventurous souls, winter brings snow-covered forests, frozen lakes, and the chance to elope in a true alpine wonderland. You can ski, snowshoe, or even say your vows during a cozy cabin getaway. But do plan for potential weather delays and road closures, because Mammoth gets serious snow! It’s perfect for couples who are flexible and excited about a magical, snow-globe kind of day.
Top Mammoth Lakes Elopement Locations
There are so many stunning places to choose from for your Mammoth Lakes elopement, but here are some of my favorites!
Convict Lake Loop
The backdrop of this location is the Sierra Nevada 12,241′ peak Mount Morrison. The Convict Lake Loop, named after a famous shoot-out between escaped convicts and a sheriff’s posse, provides gorgeous scenery at every turn. This is a popular spot for camping and fishing, and there are plenty of places to dip your toes in the lake. This loop is part of the Inyo National Forest, a nearly 2-million-acre area that spreads across the Eastern Sierras.
You’re also a short drive from several other iconic spots in Mammoth Lakes, like some incredible overlooks, sunset vistas, hot springs, other enchanting lakes, beautiful forests, and more!

Crystal Lake Trail
The Crystal Lake Trail is one of the most popular trails in Inyo National Forest. The trail is just under 3 miles round-trip with a decent climb, but once you get to the top, you’re rewarded with panoramic views of the Mammoth Lake Basin. From the lake, you have the option to continue hiking up to Mammoth Crest, which has even more beautiful views.

McLeod Lake
McLeod Lake is the definition of a peaceful, easy-to-reach elopement location. The trail is super short—just about a mile round trip—and it starts right from Horseshoe Lake, making it a great choice if you want something low-key and accessible. Once you’re there, you’ll find a quiet lake surrounded by forest and mountain peaks in the distance.
Dogs are welcome and may be off-leash in some areas.

Lake George
It might get old of me saying this, but Lake George is also super gorgeous! It’s known for its iconic Crystal Crag overlooking Mammoth. It’s also easy to access by car, which is awesome if you want great views without a long hike, and it’s surrounded by classic Sierra scenery with pine trees, jagged peaks, and sparkling blue water.

Lake Sabrina
A bit of a drive from central Mammoth Lakes, but so worth it. Lake Sabrina is an easy-access alpine lake, surrounded by aspens. There are several trails around here for different ability levels, so whether you want to do a short hike or just enjoy the views by the water, you’ve got options. In the fall, the colors here are next-level.

Sky Meadows via Emerald Lake
The trail to Sky Meadows starts from Lake George and winds past Emerald Lake (which is gorgeous on its own). It’s 3.6 miles round trip and quite a challenging one, but once you reach Sky Meadows, you’ll find wide-open alpine meadows with mountain backdrops that feel completely tucked away from the world. Also, dogs are welcome here, but must be on a leash.

Lundy Lake Canyon
Lundy Canyon is a hidden gem in the Eastern Sierras. Many people think that Lundy Lake is the only attraction in this canyon, but there is so much more to explore along this trail. It is especially gorgeous in fall when aspens turn all golden, however, it is beautiful all year round. There’s a peaceful lake, rugged canyon walls, and trails that let you explore as much or as little as you’d like.
If you are experienced with off-trail navigating and looking for an adventure, the trail can be taken all the way up to Saddleback Lake over the ridge.
Want help narrowing it down? I help my couples choose the perfect location based on what they love, whether that’s epic views, minimal hiking, or total seclusion.

Do You Need an Elopement Permit?
Depending on where you want to elope, you might need a permit. Some spots don’t require one at all, while others do—and the fee is typically around $250. For example, Inyo National Forest, which hosts a couple of the above-mentioned elopement locations, doesn’t need a special use permit.
However, once you’ve picked your location, it’s super important to check in with the local forest service to see what’s needed. I help all my couples navigate this step to make sure everything is good to go for their day!

When you’re choosing the best place for you, I’d really recommend something that could double as an indoor elopement location in case of adverse weather, and make sure that it isn’t toooo far away from your ceremony and adventure spot so you’d get to spend more time enjoying yourselves and not so much on the commuting.

How to Get Your Marriage License
If you obtain a marriage license in one county, you are not restricted to getting married in that specific county. You can have your wedding ceremony in any California county. However, the license must be returned to the county where it was issued for official recording.
The closest place to get your Mammoth Lakes marriage license is Mono County.
The marriage license is typically valid immediately upon issuance and for up to 90 days. This means that you must have your marriage ceremony within the 90-day period, and the completed license must be returned to the county clerk’s office for recording.
In California, couples have the option to self-solemnize their wedding, which means they can act as their own officiants during the marriage ceremony. This allows couples to exchange their vows and legally marry without the need for an external officiant. Here are some key points to keep in mind:
- Self-Solemnization Rights: California law permits self-solemnization, allowing couples to marry without an officiant. This is particularly useful for couples who prefer a private and intimate ceremony.
- Marriage License Requirements: Even if you choose to self-solemnize, you must still obtain a valid marriage license from the county clerk’s office before the ceremony.
- Completing the Marriage License: When you self-solemnize, both partners must sign the marriage license as the officiants. Ensure that you follow the county’s guidelines for completing and returning the license.
- Witnesses (Optional): While not required for self-solemnization, some couples choose to have witnesses present during the ceremony. Check with your county clerk’s office to confirm local regulations.

Documentation
Be sure to understand the specific documentation and requirements set by the county where you obtain your marriage license. Each county may have slightly different procedures.
Hot Tip
If you don’t want to worry about all these things for your elopement, you can get legally married beforehand and then head out for your adventures later!

Final Tips for Your Mammoth Lakes Adventure
- Expect spotty service, so make sure to download maps and set meetup points in advance.
- Plan around the weather and bring layers, you just never know with the weather! It can change fast!
- Respect Leave No Trace principles.
- You may need a high-clearance vehicle depending on the location you’re heading to
- Double-check whether your elopement location needs a permit. Information online can be outdated, so it’s better to be safe than sorry!
- Start earlier in the day, even before sunrise, to avoid crowds, especially in peak seasons.
Mammoth Lakes Elopement Cost
The cost of eloping in Mammoth Lakes can vary depending on how simple or luxurious you want your day to be, but most couples spend somewhere between $5,000 and $20,000. You can elope as cheaply as the cost of a marriage license and your elopement permit + some logistical travel costs. But if you’d like to add activities, bring guests, get nice elopement attire, travel, accommodations, get a photographer, and other vendors, the costs will be much higher.
You’re in control of your budget and can craft an experience that reflects your priorities, without the stress or expense of a traditional wedding.
