Unique Iceland Adventure Elopement Ideas Each Season

Before I get into all the fun activities you can do in Iceland during your elopement getaway, I wanted to talk to you about the seasons. Depending on the season you choose, you’ll get different weather and different activity options, as well.

Summer

In summer, Iceland comes alive with the midnight sun, giving you nearly 24 hours of daylight in June. The landscape is vibrant and lush, with green moss, wildflowers, and sweeping, colorful scenery that make an incredible backdrop. Additionally, more remote and rugged places like the Highlands and Westfjords become accessible as F-roads open up.

However, summer is also peak tourist season, so if you want a more secluded experience, we’ll plan your elopement early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowds. Plus, Iceland’s weather can still be unpredictable, so even in summer, pack layers and expect sudden changes in temperature or rain.

Iceland Activities in Summer

• Go on a horseback ride on an Icelandic Horse
• Snorkel or dive between the Tectonic Plates in Silfra Fissure
• Take a boat ride in Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon
• Hike to a secluded hot spring. There are so many hidden hot springs all over Iceland!
• Summer is prime time for whale-watching, so head to Husavik or Akureyri to spot humpbacks, minke whales, or even blue whales if you’re lucky!
• Explore Landmannalaugar
• Fly in a helicopter to get even better views
• Go Puffin spotting on the Westfjords
• Have a picnic somewhere nice, like one of the Black Sand beaches
• Stay in a unique Airbnb – there are glass lodges, rustic inns, floating cabins on lagoons and so much more. 
• Go on a road trip through the Golden Circle
• Visit some of Iceland’s waterfalls
• Go kayaking in the Westfjords
• Go camping under the Midnight Sun in one of Iceland’s many national parks

Winter

Winter turns Iceland into a magical winter wonderland. With shorter days, especially from November through January, you get about 4-5 hours of daylight. Nights are dark and clear—perfect for spotting the aurora borealis! Winter is going to bring fewer crowds, which is always nice if you want the feeling of complete privacy during your elopement day.

Iceland Activities in Winter

• Take a dog sledding tour through Iceland’s snowy landscapes
• Check out the Northern Lights
• Take a snowmobile tour in Langjökull Glacier
• Tour some ice caves
• You can try spotting some puffins in early winter (but they will be more common in summer)
• Take some time to unwind in one of Iceland’s famous geothermal spas, like the Blue Lagoon
• Visit the Lava Tunnel, it’s such a unique experience to see these underground formations!
• Explore Diamond Beach. The ice sparks like diamonds, and it’s AMAZING!
• There are still some winter boat tours as well, and the icy landscapes give it an even more dramatic feel
• Visiting Iceland in December? Hafnarfjörður transforms into a cozy Christmas village with lights, decor, and festive markets.
• Visit the waterfalls! You may think it’s more of a summer activity, however, the frozen waterfalls look absolutely amazing and you’ll get a way different experience than you would in the summertime.

There are SO MANY absolutely epic things to do in Iceland and amazing locations to visit. Your time there can be as chill or adventurous as you’d like it to be, and a lot will also depend on how long you’re planning to stay.
