Some wedding days don’t fit into just one box, and honestly, I think that’s what makes them so special. Jeff and Ella’s Muir Woods elopement is proof that you don’t have to choose between an intimate adventure and celebrating with the people you love. After buying their first home, their original plans shifted, but instead of giving up on their dream, they found a way to have both, a celebration with family back in Ohio and a private adventure together among the California redwoods and coastline!

A Muir Woods Elopement That Felt Completely Their Own

Jeff and Ella traveled from Northeast Ohio for an afternoon spent exploring the redwoods before ending the day on the California coast. After months of planning together, finally meeting them in person was so exciting. Before we even made it into the forest, a stranger stopped to congratulate them and handed them a $50 bill as a wedding gift! We were all caught completely off guard, and it ended up being such a fun way to kick off the day.

Once we stepped beneath the towering redwoods, everything slowed down. I had scouted a few quieter spots ahead of time, so we wandered away from the busiest trails and found peaceful little corners of the forest all to ourselves. They even spotted deer along the way before settling beside a fallen tree over a creek to read handwritten letters from their families. One note from an uncle ended with, “Don’t f*** it up,” and it had all of us laughing. Even though their families weren’t physically there, those letters made it feel like they were part of every moment.

From a Muir Woods Elopement to Private Vows on the Coast

One of my favorite things about this area is how easily you can experience two completely different landscapes in one day. After leaving Muir Woods, we made our way to one of my favorite overlooks along the San Francisco coastline. Standing above the ocean, Jeff and Ella exchanged private vows with nothing but the sound of the waves below. It was quiet, emotional, and exactly the kind of moment they had been dreaming about.

Before planning your own Muir Woods elopement, here’s one helpful tip: every vehicle needs its own parking reservation, so don’t forget to book those ahead of time. Since Jeff and Ella were already legally married, weren’t holding a ceremony in the park, and didn’t have guests with them, we didn’t need a photography permit for this adventure.

Ending the Day With Cake, the Beach, and Sunset

After their vows, we made our way down to the beach where I had a simple picnic waiting for them. They cut their cake, played music, and took their time soaking in the ocean breeze while the sun slowly dipped toward the horizon. It wasn’t about packing the schedule full, it was about giving themselves space to actually enjoy the day they had spent so long dreaming about.

They shared a first dance in the sand, watched the waves roll in, and ended the evening wrapped in the kind of golden light that makes you want time to slow down. Jeff and Ella’s day is such a great reminder that you don’t have to choose between celebrating with family and creating an unforgettable adventure together. Sometimes the best wedding days are the ones that make room for both.
